Virbac Animal Health has expanded its April recall of some lots of Iverhart Plus Flavored Chewables, a heartworm and internal parasite preventive, according to PetMD.com. The potency of the ingredient ivermectin in these lots did not meet the company’s stability specifications.
Dogs that are in the upper third of each weight range may not be getting full protection from heartworms.
“According to a Virbac letter obtained by Pet360, testing revealed that 14 lots were below ivermectin potency levels prior to their expiration,” PetMD.com reports.
“The company also notes that the other 17 lots remain within specification, but are being recalled as a precautionary measure.”
The following lot numbers of Iverhart Plus Flavored Chewables are included in the expanded recall:
Small (up to 25 lbs.):
Medium (26-50 lbs.):
Large (51-100 lbs.):
The lot number is stamped on the side lid or flap of the box, and on the blister foil of individual doses.
In April 2012 Virbac Animal Health recalled one lot of Iverhart Max Chewable Tablets for the same reason. Iverhart Max products are not included in this expanded recall.
