A limited supply of Nature’s Recipe Oven Baked Biscuits with Real Chicken has been voluntarily recalled because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.
According to a news release Saturday from Nature’s Recipe, which is a brand of Del Monte Foods, “No pet or consumer illnesses from this product have been reported to date. However, because of its commitment to safety and quality, the company is conducting a voluntary recall of this product.”
The following Nature’s Recipe Oven Baked Biscuits with Real Chicken products, all sold in 19-ounce stand-up, resealable pouches, were recalled (the codes are on the bottom panel of the package):
- Lot Code 2199TP; UPC Code 30521 51549; Best If Used By Date 10 11 13
- Lot Code 2200TP; UPC Code 30521 51549; Best If Used By Date 10 12 13
These products were distributed nationally, primarily through pet specialty retailers. They were manufactured at the company’s plant in Topeka, Kan.
Salmonella can affect both animals and people who don’t wash their hands after handling contaminated pet products. While severe Salmonella infections are rare in adult dogs with healthy immune systems, they can be lethal to puppies whose immune systems are not fully developed, and older dogs with weakened immune systems. The most common symptom of Salmonella poisoning in dogs is diarrhea.
Consumers who have purchased these products should discard them immediately. For more information about the recall and for obtaining a replacement product, call the Del Monte Foods Consumer Hotline at 800-237-3856 or fill out the company’s online Contact Us form.
