Latest Dry Dog Food Recalls Due to Salmonella Contamination

This is the latest recall information as of July 18, 2012.

golden retriever eating dry foodSeveral brands of dry dog food that were all manufactured in the same Diamond Pet Foods plant in South Carolina have been recalled over the past two months due to possible Salmonella Infantis contamination.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on July 18 that 49 people have become ill after handling these products. This includes 47 people in 20 U.S. states and two people in Canada. Ten of these people had to be hospitalized.

On May 17 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that two dogs have been infected with Salmonella Infantis after eating recalled products. (Some dry cat food is affected as well – the Calgary Herald reported on May 18 that two cats in a Montreal shelter died after eating Diamond Pet Foods cat food, and one person became sick.)

All of the recalled products were manufactured at a plant in Gaston, S.C. According to CBS News, the same facility made “mold-contaminated food that killed dozens of dogs nationwide in 2005.” The FDA website reported in December 2005 that 41 dogs in four states had become ill from eating Diamond Pet Food products, and 23 died. The Missouri-based company later paid $3.1 million to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by consumers whose dogs were sickened.

Salmonella can affect both animals and people who don’t wash their hands after handling contaminated pet products. While severe Salmonella infections are rare in adult dogs with healthy immune systems, they can be lethal to puppies whose immune systems are not fully developed, and older dogs with weakened immune systems.

If you purchased any of these products, you should stop feeding it to your dog and throw it away. Do not handle the dry dog food. If you think you may have Salmonella poisoning, see your health care provider.

You can register a complaint about FDA-regulated pet foods via the FDA’s Safety Reporting Portal or by calling the Consumer Complaint Coordinator for your state.

Salmonella contamination can be harmful to both humans and dogs. There is a risk to humans from handling contaminated dry pet products that carry Salmonella bacteria, and they can become infected with Salmonella. Be sure to thoroughly wash your hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. www.luckypet.com.au
