Diamond Pet Foods, which recently recalled nine brands of its dry dog food due to Salmonella contamination, is now recalling some of its Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult Dog Lamb & Rice Formula for the same reason.
Sixteen people have become ill after handling recalled Diamond Pet Foods products. On May 17 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that two dogs have been infected with Salmonella Infantis after eating the products.
All of the recalled products were manufactured at a plant in Gaston, S.C. According to CBS News, the same facility made “mold-contaminated food that killed dozens of dogs nationwide in 2005.” The FDA website reported in December 2005 that 41 dogs in four states had become ill from eating Diamond Pet Food products, and 23 died. The Missouri-based company later paid $3.1 million to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by consumers whose dogs were sickened.
Yet the same plant continues to be used by Diamond, as well as Apex, Canidae, Natural Balance, Solid Gold and Wellness, which all recalled certain products manufactured there.
On May 18 Diamond issued a statement that it was also recalling sample sizes, 6-pound and 18-pound bags of Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult Dog Lamb & Rice Formula dry dog food. All of the products were manufactured on Aug. 26, 2011.
The products were distributed in Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.
The products have the following production codes and best-by dates:

DSL0801 – 26-Aug-2012
