Ten Early Dog Cancer Warning Signs

dog_at_vetMay is Pet Cancer Awareness Month. Are you aware that cancer affects one out of three dogs? According to the National Canine Cancer Foundation, a non-profit corporation dedicated to ending cancer as a major dog health issue, half of the dogs will die from it.

The rate of canine cancer increases with age; cancer is responsible for about half the deaths of dogs older than 10.

The good news is that some cancers, such as breast cancer and testicular cancer, can usually be prevented by spaying or neutering your dog.

These are the top 10 early cancer warning signs to look out for, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA):

Abnormal swellings that persist or continue to grow

 Sores that don’t heal

 Weight loss

 Loss of appetite

Bleeding or discharge from any body opening

 Offensive odor

 Difficulty eating or swallowing

Hesitation to exercise or loss of stamina

 Persistent lameness or stiffness

  Difficulty breathing, urinating or defecating

You should have your dog examined by a veterinarian if he shows any of these symptoms.

If your dog has been diagnosed with cancer, supplementing his diet with reishi and green tea may help relieve his symptoms and prevent secondary cancers.

Reishi is an herbal mushroom that stimulates the production of natural anti-cancer substances, which inhibit the growth of tumors and even causes tumors to regress. Studies have found that reishi can effectively prevent the growth of secondary cancers in dogs.

Green tea contains polyphenols that enhance immunity and protect against free radical damage. In a 2002 study, a Labrador Retriever with lymphoma became completely symptom free when he was given daily doses of green tea.
