These days it’s not uncommon to see pets dressed up in the latest fashion trends, but one Chihuahua in Monterey, Calif., was concealing more than just a scrawny body.
According to the Monterey Herald, Marina police were searching a suspect’s apartment for a parole violation when they discovered methamphetamine, marijuana, counterfeiting materials and other paraphernalia and arrested him.
The suspect, Christopher Smith, 28, also had a pet Chihuahua dressed up in a brown corduroy sweater.
On a whim, the police decided to search the dog just in case, and found even more drugs hidden in the sweater.
The website stated that the dog’s sweater had a little pocket in which police found a little more methamphetamine — “About two grams,” Janicki said. “It was strictly a hunch, it was a really good hunch.”
While the owner may have thought that this was just another great hiding place for his stash, he failed to realize that he placed his little friend in a lot of danger.
Last year when Paris Hilton was arrested for possession of cocaine in her purse, i Love Dogs Ambassador Dr. Patrick Mahaney wrote about his concerns about her small dogs having access to the drugs.
“My clinical practice experiences indicate that most pets (especially dogs) will consume food or other substances when given the opportunity to do so. On innumerable occasions, I have seen pets wolf down edibles (gum, food, etc.), non-digestibles (plastic, hair bands, used feminine products, etc.), prescription and non-prescription human (and veterinary) medications, and recreational drugs previously considered to be safely contained within an owner’s purse, backpack or European shoulder bag,” Mahaney wrote.
Luckily for Smith, his dog didn’t ingest any of the drugs that were hidden in his sweater. But according to the Monterey Herald, Smith was booked into the Monterey County Jail on a no-bail probation hold, and his dog was allowed to stay at home.
“We assumed it was an innocent victim,” Janicki said.
